Why Your 70-Hour Workweek Isn’t Growing Your Business

It’s 9 PM on a Tuesday.

You’re still at your desk. Your coffee’s gone cold. Your family ate dinner without you. Again.

You opened your laptop this morning at 6:30 AM. You’ve been grinding all day. Emails. Calls. Fires to put out. Problems to solve.

You look at your to-do list. Twenty-seven things checked off.

But here’s the thing that keeps you up at night.

Your business isn’t growing. Not really.

Sure, you’re busy. Crazy busy. But busy doesn’t pay the bills. Busy doesn’t build the business you pictured when you started.

And that 3 AM thought creeps in again. “Am I even cut out for this?”

You’re Not Alone in This Trap

I’ve worked with business owners just like you. Smart people. Hard workers. Experts at their craft.

They’re putting in the hours. Seventy. Sometimes eighty. They’re making payroll for everyone else. Barely paying themselves.

This isn’t what they signed up for.

When they started their business, they had a vision. Freedom. Control. Building something that matters. Being there for family dinners.

Instead, they’re trapped. The business owns them.

Here’s what I’ve learned after nearly 20 years helping businesses grow. Your problem isn’t effort. You’re working harder than almost anyone I know.

Your problem is direction.

The Real Problem: Activity Without Strategy

Let me tell you what I see happen over and over.

Business owners confuse motion with progress. They confuse being busy with moving forward.

You spend all day putting out fires. Answering emails. Taking calls. Handling the urgent stuff. And at the end of the day, you’re exhausted.

But exhausted doesn’t mean effective.

Here’s the hard truth. Most of those twenty-seven things you checked off today? They didn’t actually grow your business.

They kept it running. That’s different.

Think of it like a hamster wheel. You’re running fast. You’re working hard. But you’re not getting anywhere.

And the worst part? You’re too busy to even notice.

Why This Keeps Happening

There’s a phrase I use with every business owner I work with. Planning without strategy creates chaos.

Let me break that down.

You probably plan your days. You have a to-do list. Maybe you use a calendar. You know what needs to get done today.

That’s planning. And planning is good.

But here’s the question. What’s driving those plans?

Do you know where your business is actually going? What you’re building toward? What needs to happen in the next six months to truly grow?

Or are you just handling whatever shows up?

Most business owners are so deep in the day-to-day that they never step back. They never ask the big questions. They never build a real strategy.

So they end up reacting. Responding. Surviving.

But not growing.

The Cost of No Strategy

Let me paint a picture of what this looks like.

You work seventy hours this week. Next week, you work seventy more. The month after that? Same thing.

Your revenue stays flat. Or maybe it inches up a little. But your profit? That’s stuck. Or worse, going down.

You keep thinking, “If I just work a little harder. If I just push a little more.”

But it doesn’t work. Because effort without direction is just noise.

Meanwhile, your health suffers. Your marriage suffers. Your kids wonder why you’re never around.

And that voice in your head gets louder. “Maybe I’m not cut out for this. Maybe I should just go back to a regular job.”

That’s the cost of chaos. That’s what happens when you’re working hard without working smart.

There’s a Better Way

Here’s what I know from helping business owners break free from this trap.

You need strategy before you need more hustle.

You need to bring order to the chaos. You need to figure out where you’re actually trying to go. Then you can figure out how to get there.

That’s when the 70-hour weeks start shrinking. That’s when you start leading your business instead of your business leading you.

And that’s when you actually have a life again.

One Simple Exercise You Can Do This Week

I’m going to give you something you can do right now. It won’t take long. Maybe thirty minutes.

But it will show you exactly why you’re stuck.

Grab a piece of paper. Or open a blank document. Write down everything you did yesterday.

Not what you planned to do. What you actually did. Be honest.

Now, next to each item, ask yourself this question. “Did this move my business forward? Or did this just keep things running?”

Be brutal. Most of what you did probably falls into the “keeping things running” category.

That’s okay. You need to know the truth.

Now look at your list. How much time did you spend on things that actually grow your business?

Things like:

  • Defining where you want your business to be in twelve months
  • Figuring out what needs to change to get there
  • Building systems so you’re not the bottleneck
  • Training your team to handle what you’re handling

My guess? Not much. Maybe zero.

That’s your problem. And that’s why seventy hours isn’t working.

The Path Forward

You can keep doing what you’re doing. You can keep grinding. Keep putting in the hours. Keep hoping things will change.

But hope isn’t a strategy.

Or you can step back. You can get clear on where you’re going. You can build a real plan to get there.

You can bring order to the chaos.

When you do that, something shifts. You stop reacting to everything. You start leading. You make decisions with confidence because you know where you’re headed.

Your seventy-hour weeks become fifty-hour weeks. Then forty.

Your business grows. But more than that, you get your life back.

That’s what strategy does. It gives you direction. It gives you clarity. It gives you control.

What Happens Next

The business owners who figure this out? They transform their companies. Not by working harder. By working with purpose.

They know what matters. They focus there. They delegate the rest.

They lead their teams with confidence because they have a clear vision. Their teams respect them more. Trust them more.

And most importantly, they show up at home. They have dinner with their families. They take weekends off. They actually enjoy the business they built.

That’s not a fantasy. That’s what happens when you get strategy right.

But if you don’t? If you keep doing what you’re doing?

You’ll be at your desk at 9 PM next Tuesday. And the Tuesday after that. And the one after that.

Until you burn out. Or your marriage falls apart. Or you sell the business for pennies because you just can’t do it anymore.

I don’t want that for you. You started this business for a reason. You deserve to see it grow. And you deserve to have a life while you do it.

Ready to Stop Running on the Hamster Wheel?

You just did the exercise. You know how much of your week is spent keeping things running versus actually growing.

Now what?

You need a system. A step-by-step way to get clear on where you’re going and what actually matters to get there.

That’s exactly what the F.O.R.W.A.R.D. Framework Workbook gives you. It’s free, and it walks you through building real strategy—not just another to-do list.

Inside, you’ll define your outcomes, identify what’s actually driving revenue, and build a roadmap that turns those 70-hour weeks into 40-hour weeks. The kind where your business grows and you’re home for dinner.

It’s time to bring order to the chaos.
